Sharp pain & scare -Part I

4/11: (Journal)

I had my own little scare today. I have been having sharp pains in my pelvic area/ lower right side by my groin. It has been coming and going, but today- it knocked me off my feet. It hurt so bad, I was scared to death. It felt like someone was punching me there.

So I called the nurse. She was concerned with this and my dizzy spells earlier this week- so she got my doc on right away.

The doc has told me that it sounds like Round Ligament pains. She told me to drink lots of water (Already am doing that...), and rest off my feet the rest of today. Tonight and Tomorrow am I should take my temp and see if I have a fever and to check if I have any spotting... If I do- I'm to go to the ER. If not, she wants to have me check in with her again.

So- I've been reading online about Round Ligament Pain, and all I'm finding is saying it is 2nd Trimester pain--not 4-5 week pain. So I called the nurse again the next day. I heard back from the "head nurse" at 4:15pm.

The nurse asked questions about where my pain was. I told her my concern about only reading that Round Ligament Pains being in 2nd trimester. After reading my charts from my discussion yesterday, she tells me that it's likely an ectopic pregnancy. Just like that. No sensitivity, nothing.

She said that if my pain is disctinctly on one side- which it is- that is the most common symptom. I asked her how we confirm. She said I can try to go to the ER, but it's too soon in my pregnancy (I'm 5 weeks) to really have an ultrasound prove anything. She said by end of next week I might be able to go in and they could tell.

I didnt want to believe it- so I reaffirmed that I have no spotting or a fever. She said- well, that can come later.

I understand they can't "tell you anything for fear of malpractice" but she bascially put nothing but fear and worry into my head. I'm too early to get a conclusive ultrasound result and can't really "do" anything. At that point, I'm angry she even told me this- cuz If I can't do anything, I don't want to know. It just makes me sick with worry.

She did say if I get a continuous stabbing pain that does not go away, to go to the ER. Either way, I plan to discuss with my doc if she ever calls me back today.

After many tears, I call Luke (Em's husband). He tells me that sharp pains are common, and really helps calm my fears. He tells me to go to the doctor the next day if it doesn't get better.
